Rats: are they that bad?

RAT ON WALL IN OXFORDSHIRE

When a client in the past rang pest control people, the company would come out, put some bait stations down with poison in and leave. So how did they know it was rats if there were no signs or proof? Well, most just went on the client's word and baited. Some are so set in their ways that they carry on this type of practice today. This is also against some recent regulations. The practice has to lead to wildlife being affected. Take the Barn Owl, for example, in the 2015 figures, 95% of its population had traces of rodenticides in them. This isn’t great for wildlife or our industry and is why the CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) regulations were put into place.

So, is this the clients’ fault? The answer in most cases is NO. The clients just want the best value for money. But is the lowest possible price going to deliver the great personal service you deserve? Again, that answer is NO. The saying “pay cheap pay twice” comes to mind, not forgetting “pay peanuts get monkeys.” Companies are the same, they always want the cheapest contracts to tick the box; but here again they don’t get the service they or their clients deserve, which sometimes leaves them with court cases and heavy fines.

At this point, I would like to state that we, at Shire Pest Solutions, are very competitive with our prices and we have built a reputation for our great personal service. We understand that no two jobs are the same and shouldn’t be treated as such.

Anyway, back to the point. We hope the pest bait damage to our wildlife is falling, thanks to the improved industry standards. These recognise that need and set out to ensure that rodenticides are used correctly and in ways that minimise the threat to wildlife and other non-target animals. We believe that our industry’s commitment to protecting the environment is good news.

Now, if we could just get people who buy their own bait to understand it’s doing more harm to wildlife, then maybe our industry would not continue to get all the blame for the wildlife that suffers.

Thank you for reading and remember, if you have the pest we have the right solution.
