Carpet Beetles

Having problems with carpet beetles?

The varied carpet beetle and the museum beetle are the most commonly encountered by pest controllers. They have a speckled appearance which arises because of the many scales which cover the elytra and the prothorax which are black, white and yellow giving a spotted appearance.

Additional Information

Carpet beetle larvae, often called ‘woolly bears,’ are banded in appearance and covered in short bristles, resembling small, furry caterpillars and growing up to 5mm in length. As they mature into adult beetles, they take on a round shape, equipped with six legs and antennae. There are a few different types of carpet beetles, including the varied or variegated carpet beetles, which can be orange, black, or white speckled and range from 2 to 4mm long. Another type, the black carpet beetle, is distinguished by its entirely black colouration.

Carpet beetles can enter your home through various means. They may come in with shopping bags, bunches of flowers, animal furs and skins (including stuffed specimens), and already contaminated fabrics and furnishings. These pests are resourceful and can find multiple ways to invade your living space.

The presence of carpet beetles is often a matter of bad luck. However, if the problem persists, it is typically due to conditions that allow them to thrive, such as a dirty carpet. Carpet beetles feed on hair, dead insects, and dead skin, making an unvacuumed floor an ideal environment for them. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to prevent these pests from finding a suitable habitat in your home.

Vacuum – All floor areas before treatment starts.

Treatment- Insecticide spray is needed to deal with Larvae known as woolly bears, and all floor areas will need to be treated as these pests can cause significant damage.
