Having problems with carpet beetles?
Carpet beetles and the museum beetle are the most commonly encountered by pest controllers. They have a speckled appearance which arises because of the many scales which cover the elytra and the prothorax which are black, white and yellow giving a spotted appearance.
Additional Information
Carpet beetle larvae, known as ‘woolly bears,’ have a banded appearance and short bristles. They look like tiny, furry caterpillars and grow up to 5mm long. As they develop into adult beetles, they become round, with six legs and antennae. There are different types of carpet beetles. The varied or variegated carpet beetle has orange, black, or white speckles and measures 2 to 4mm. The black carpet beetle is entirely black and slightly larger.
These pests find many ways into homes. They can hitch a ride on shopping bags, flowers, animal furs, and even stuffed specimens. Contaminated fabrics and furnishings also bring them inside. Once they enter, they quickly settle in and multiply if conditions suit them.
Carpet beetles are often a result of chance, but ongoing infestations happen when they find the right environment. They thrive in homes with dust, pet hair, and uncleaned carpets. Their diet includes hair, dead insects, and skin flakes, making a neglected floor the perfect breeding ground.
Preventing an infestation starts with regular cleaning. Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery frequently to remove food sources. Pay attention to areas under furniture, along skirting boards, and inside air vents, where debris collects. Wash or dry-clean fabrics, especially wool, fur, or silk items, before storing them. Keep wardrobes and storage spaces tidy, as beetles often lay eggs in undisturbed areas.
Check second-hand furniture, clothing, and textiles before bringing them inside. If beetles appear, act fast to control the problem. Professional pest control may be necessary for severe cases.
Early detection and proper maintenance are key. Keeping your home clean and inspecting items before bringing them inside reduces the risk of carpet beetles taking hold.

DO CARPET BEETLES CARRY DISEASES?
Carpet beetles do not carry germs or spread diseases, so their presence does not pose a direct health risk. However, their larvae, known as woolly bears, can cause significant damage to fabrics, carpets, and other materials in your home. While they aren’t a health hazard, their destructive feeding habits can lead to costly repairs if left unchecked.
